Passage: A Wabi-Sabi Desert Retreat in Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree, California

This is Passage, a fully custom residence in Joshua Tree conceived not as a house set down in the landscape but as an extension of the land itself. Guided by the rhythms of the desert, the design blurs the boundary between interior and exterior through expansive glazing, restrained materiality, and spaces that invite a slower, more intentional way of living.

A Contemporary Desert Residence Designed for Stillness

Passage is a fully custom residence in Joshua Tree conceived not as a house set down in the landscape but as an extension of the land itself. Guided by the rhythms of the high desert, the design explores the relationship between architecture, interior, and environment through expansive glazing, carefully framed views, and a restrained material palette drawn from the surrounding terrain. Hand-troweled plaster walls, natural stone, dark-stained woods, black steel divided-light windows, and textural woven elements create spaces that feel both grounded and enduring, selected for their ability to soften and deepen beautifully over time. The defining gesture is the arrival itself: an oversized pivot entry door that opens to a cinematic view of the pool and desert horizon beyond. From there, the home unfolds in layers, where light, shadow, materiality, and landscape shape the experience of each space. The interiors were developed as a continuation of the architecture, with furnishings, lighting, and finishes chosen to create a sense of quiet cohesion. The result is a residence that feels deeply connected to its setting, reflecting Wanderluxe's belief in architecture over decoration, restraint over excess, and homes designed to be lived in and felt.
